The Field Training Officer Program is designed to ease a new officer's transition from the academic setting of the Vermont Police Academy to the performance of the general policing duties required by the department. The academy training is the first step of the process, and provides a solid base for the recruit to build upon during the FTO program.

When a newly hired officer begins employment with the department, the officer will incur a regimented training program for up to 12 weeks. This training takes place on the road, under the supervision of a Field Training Officer. FTO's are carefully selected and trained in order to be able to supervise, train and evaluate new recruits during the FTO program.

The Field Training Officer Program is coordinated by Lieutenant Kirkpatrick and Lieutenant Evans.
