The Brattleboro Police and Vermont state Police responded to Rt 30 underneath the I 91 overpass after receiving a call of a male subject (Jason Fulton) who was about to jump off the bridge and into the West River. Officer Perkins and Officer Witherbee were two of the first officers on scene, and ended up going into the river to rescue Jason Fulton after he jumped. The fall was approximately 110 feet. Jason Fulton later passed away at the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital. This incident is being investigated by the Vermont State Police.
The investigation began on March 30, 2008 when the child made a disclosure to her parents that Childs inappropriately touched her. Her parents then contacted the Brattleboro Police Department and an investigation was begun in conjunction with DCF. As the investigation progressed, probable cause was developed to charge Childs with the offenses.
