FROM THE OFFICE OF THE CHIEF OF POLICE

Chief Michael Fitzgerald

On 5/4/18 at approximately 9:00pm four Brattleboro police officers located and confronted a suspect wanted for multiple armed robberies. While attempting to contact the suspect he fled from police. He was located a short time later and while attempting to arrest him, three Brattleboro officers fired weapons at the suspect. The suspect was injured and is currently being treated at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center.

Vermont State Police is investigating this shooting. This is the standard practice of BPD in order to increase the independence of the investigation and insure a fair and impartial investigation occurs. BPD command staff is in frequent and ongoing communication with VSP commanders in order to facilitate and assist with this effort.

No BPD officers were seriously injured during the incident. The three officers that fired their weapons have been placed on paid administrative leave. This standard procedure exists in order to allow those officers to manage and work through the stress that is involved with such an incident and to facilitate their mental and physical health. It also allows for the investigation to move forward in an efficient manner.

The suspect, preliminarily identified as Mark Triolo, 46, was the only occupant of the vehicle and at this point, the only suspect. He is currently in police custody and their is no reason to think there is any greater than normal concern for public safety.

The chief extends his gratitude to the Brattleboro Fire Department, Rescue Inc, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, Vermont State Police, and the Windham County Sheriff's Department for their assistance with the incident.
