On 1/18/19 BPD officers responded to Green Street School for a report that at around 7:45am someone had approached an 11 year old child and offered to give him a ride to school. The child had been walking on Clark Avenue to his bus stop at the time. The person was unknown to the child. The child declined at which time the person said "get in the car." The child then ran away to the bus stop and the car drove off.
There is no information that the person exited the vehicle, made any attempt to grab the child, or made any threatening statements.
The person is described as a middle aged woman of unknown race with curly brown or blond hair. The vehicle is described as a light blue 4-door car, possibly a Subaru.
The investigation into this incident is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Officer David Lockerby at 802-257-7950.
BPD would like to stress the importance of knowing the route your children take when walking to bus stops and encourage them to use sidewalks, crossing guards, and if possible to walk with other children. It is also imperative to regularly communicate with your children about what happens during their day and how they should respond to such situations.
