_______________ _______________

Charged on: July 24, 2009
ACCUSED: AGE:

SUMMARY OF INCIDENT: On 07/24/08 a citizen of Brattleboro filed a report with the Brattleboro Police Department via Detective Erik Johnson regarding a subject she met online who had asked her if she had any children. The citizen said yes and the subject online started asking if she does anything sexual with her children and if so could they “hook up” and could he have sex with her and her child. This concerned citizen told this subject no and stopped chatting with this individual, right before he started soliciting her for images of her child. Because this citizen took the time to come and file a report with her local police department, the Brattleboro PD immediately requested a subpoena for the online user's information of the subject who had spoken to this female via a chat room. The Brattleboro PD was able to trace this subject's communications to Florida. Once we learned he was communicating from Florida, we notified the ICAC branch, which covered the jurisdiction of the area where this subject was believed to be chatting from. Undercover investigators in Florida where able to converse with this subject online, and this subject ended up sending child pornography via an online file sharing program to the under cover police officer. Investigators in Florida ended up making contact with this subject who admitted to chatting with the female in Vermont. On 09/04/09 Detective Erik Johnson was contacted by the authorities in Florida and was advised this subject will now be facing criminal charges, in Florida, for his actions regarding distribution of child pornography. If it was not for this concerned citizen investigators in Florida may not have ever made contact with this subject which later lead to his arrest. This is a prime example on why everyone who is solicited online, when it comes to sexual activities with a child or if they feel a child is endangered, should report what they had witnessed and/or experienced to law enforcement immediately or go to www.ncmec.org to make a report on the cyber tip line. Something you may think is minor can turn into something that may stop a predator and save a child. The Congressionally-mandated CyberTipline is a means for reporting crimes against children including: - Possession, manufacture, and distribution of child pornography - Online enticement of children for sexual acts - Child prostitution - Sex Tourism Involving Children - Extrafamilial Child Sexual Molestation - Unsolicited Obscene Material Sent to a Child - Misleading Domain Names - Misleading Words or Digital Images on the Internet The Brattleboro Police Department on behalf of ICAC will conduct public outreach programs for all ages, for more information please contact Detective Erik Johnson at the Brattleboro Police Department at (802) 257-7950.
